The grand mansions here, each a storybook of architectural grandeur, stand as enduring symbols of artistic and historical significance. As you delve into the list below, you'll discover how to experience these historical gems, including our wedding venue, Rosecliff. While Rosecliff will offer you an up-close glimpse of its splendor on our wedding day (and yes, it's the same Rosecliff that dazzled in the 1974 'The Great Gatsby' film), the other mansions also beckon with their own unique tales and timeless allure.

Where to eat and drink

  • The White Horse Tavern:

    • History: Established in 1673, The White Horse Tavern holds the distinction of being America's oldest operating restaurant and is recognized as the 10th oldest in the world. 

    • Ambiance: This National Historic Landmark exudes colonial charm, featuring original beams, fireplaces, and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

    • Cuisine: The menu offers refined New England fare, emphasizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with standout dishes like their classic clam chowder and pan-seared scallops.

    • Our experience: Casey and I loved dining here, you can feel the history. Casey ordered the beef Wellington and loved it.

  • The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn:

    • Ambiance: Housed in the historic Agassiz Mansion built in 1875, this elegant dining room offers panoramic views of Narragansett Bay, providing a serene and picturesque setting.

    • Cuisine: Their menu showcases contemporary American cuisine with dishes such as Rhode Island fluke prepared with rhubarb and wasabi, and venison with white asparagus. 

    • Our experience: We enjoyed lunch here and were impressed with the menu, flavor and ambiance. It's really a stunning place. Highly recommend hanging out by the lawn looking over the water after or before you dine.

  • Clarke Cook House

    • History: Established in the 1780s, the Clarke Cooke House has become a Newport institution, blending history with modern elegance. Originally a private residence, it now serves as a renowned dining destination on Bannister’s Wharf.

    • Ambiance: This multi-level venue offers a variety of atmospheres, from the cozy Bistro to the vibrant Sky Bar and the sophisticated dining room, each providing a unique experience.

    • Cuisine: Known for its fresh seafood, expertly crafted sushi, and iconic “Snowball in Hell” dessert, the menu is a reflection of Newport’s culinary excellence.

    • Our experience: Casey and I had dinner here; it was quintessential Newport, so sophisticatedly nautical. It was a very romantic and fun dinner indeed.

  • 22 Bowen's Wine Bar & Grille

    • Ambiance: Located on the waterfront, this upscale steakhouse features a sophisticated interior with dark wood accents and harbor views.

    • Cuisine: Specializing in prime steaks and seafood, complemented by an extensive wine list, it's ideal for those seeking a luxurious dining experience

    • Our experience: We sat upstairs over looking the water. We loved having a view of Bowen's Warf.

  • The Bar at The Vanderbilt Hotel

    • Ambiance: The Bar at The Vanderbilt exudes the opulence of the early 20th century, featuring dark wood paneling, plush seating, and ambient lighting that creates an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere. The decor pays homage to Alfred Vanderbilt’s love of the outdoors, with a 1920s sportsman-inspired feel. 

    • History: The Vanderbilt, a historic 1909 mansion built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, has been transformed into a luxurious hotel while preserving its Gilded Age grandeur. The Bar captures this legacy, offering a window into the lavish lifestyle and timeless elegance of Newport’s golden era.

    • Signature Cocktails: The cocktail menu is inspired by both 19th-century and modern-day Newport, featuring classic libations influenced by the property’s notable history and the city’s historic landmarks. Notable offerings include The Belcourt, an elevated take on the Greyhound cocktail, and the Turkish Espresso, a refreshed version of the classic espresso martini. For a true Gilded Age experience, try The Hunterhouse Cooler, a whiskey-based cocktail with manzanilla sherry, lemon, fresh pineapple, and seltzer, or The Chepstow Tonic, a hibiscus and rhubarb-infused gin with herbal liqueur, Peychaud’s bitters, grapefruit, and pink peppercorn.

    • Our experience: We had a wonderful time here; the drinks were amazing, and so was the entire experience.

  • Rosecliff Mansion:

    • Elegance and History Unite: Built between 1898 and 1902 for silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs, Rosecliff epitomizes Gilded Age luxury. The mansion, designed by architect Stanford White, is renowned for its heart-shaped staircase, exquisite ballroom (the largest in Newport), and beautifully landscaped gardens. It's a masterpiece of architectural elegance and the perfect backdrop for our wedding, offering a personal immersion into Newport’s historic grandeur. No need to tour here though as you'll experience it first-hand 4/27/25.

  • Cliff Walk:

    • A Journey Along Historic Mansions: This famed 3.5-mile walk offers unparalleled views of both the rugged coastline and Newport’s historic mansions. As you traverse this path, you'll encounter:

      • The Breakers: The Vanderbilt family’s awe-inspiring summer home, renowned for its opulent interiors and impressive facade.

      • Marble House: Another Vanderbilt mansion, known for its Beaux-Arts architecture and lavish use of marble.

      • The Elms: A stunning example of a late Gilded Age mansion, known for its elaborate classical interiors and beautiful sunken gardens.

      • Beechwood Mansion: Once the summer home of the Astor family, this mansion showcases the affluence of America's elite during the Gilded Age.

      • Rough Point: The home of Doris Duke, an heiress and philanthropist, known for its fine art collections and oceanfront location.

    • The Cliff Walk is not just a scenic route but a journey through the history and legacy of America’s most prominent families.

  • Sailing on Narragansett Bay:

    • Set Sail on Aquidneck Island’s Waters: Newport's identity is deeply entwined with sailing. Embark on a sailing adventure to experience Narragansett Bay's splendor, from gorgeous yachts to classic schooners.
